What Is Content Curation?
Definition of “Curate” – “To act as a curator of; organize and oversee”.
Think about a museum curator – his job is to collect things, organize them and then present them in a meaningful way to the world.
This is exactly what we will be doing – and there is a small twist. We will also be adding our own content to what we curate.
Think About the News
This about Syndication on TV (News & TV Shows).
It’s a lot like multiple news networks all covering and reporting on the same story.
Think how multiple TV networks can show the same movies and TV shows.
We are taking content and sharing it in the same way.
WHY I Use This Content Curation Strategy
It Provides Inspiration and sparks Creativity.
I noticed that Google was beginning to rank lots of Videos for various keywords.
Google Ranks “Shopping” products for “buying” keywords. This means that Google collects data and this data then tells Google what people are most likely expecting to see when they search for that keyword. For example, if you’ve ever searched for something and received a lot of Products as the result, then generally people buy things when searching for that keyword.
If you Google something and see a lot of Video results, then generally you can know that people are watching videos for those keywords and possibly in that niche.
With that being said – I use this strategy to give the searchers what they want. I give them highly targeted and Expert-level content to answer their questions.
This increases my website traffic and gives me a lot of natural backlinks.
I also get a lot of new keyword Data in my Analytics accounts which helps me to create more videos in the future. I then keep repeating this strategy over and over again.
Is This Duplicate Content?
The short answer SHOULD be, “No”. We’ll get to Why this is in a minute.
Remember, it’s like a news site reporting on a story. When ABC, CBS & MSN etc report on a story… They are all injecting their own opinions into a single event. Then they syndicate that content over their news network to their viewers.
Because we are going to be injecting our own opinions and Expert advice into content that we are curating, it is not considered “Duplicate”. Our goal is to create value by collecting, organizing and adding to the best content on the Internet in our niches. We do this through articles and videos.
When the News stations syndicate their content and show it to their viewers – is that considered “Duplicate” content? No, absolutely not. This is because they are reporting on a story, adding their own content and then syndicating it to their viewers. Even though multiple sources are reporting on it (just like multiple websites will have similar content) each news station has a specific point of view they wish to make and express in their stories. Each news station has it’s own “market” in a sense even though they are reporting on identical information and they share this information with their audience in mind.
How to Curate Content to Increase Traffic
I will do one of two things:
1.) I will curate content based on keywords in a niche that I want to target. This is basic niche research. I find what ranks well on already trusted websites and I begin the process of curation.
2.) I look at my website’s analytics to see what search times I rank for and receive traffic for already. I then analyze the keyword phrases that people have used to find my website and then create targeted content for those keywords.
You can curate either written articles or videos. You can even do both and we’ll explore how to do this right now.
Tips for Content Curation – #1
For written content, I will ALWAYS include a link back to the source. Why? In today’s search engines, linking out to authority sites generates trust for your website. This is naturally how the Internet works. Stop being paranoid. It always gets website owners to notice you – you can then build relationships, receive backlinks etc from them in the future.
Tip #2
I copy pieces of the article and then add my own thoughts within. I don’t recommend copying a 500 word article verbatim and then writing 50-150 unique words. No, my articles are quite long and they inject my thoughts at multiple times. I aim to write authority articles. I only work in niches that I am an expert in so I want to remain the authority that I am.
Tip #3
For videos: I LOVE this strategy. I find youtube videos that I want to curate, then I include the video in my post. I will include quotes from the video and inject my own thoughts as well. Since it’s a video, there’s no written content on record with the search engines most of the time, and you are linking to the video anyway. I always recommend including lots and lots of your own unique content when curating anything. I do this because I want to dominate for video and articles for my niches. I am the authority so my content is varied and gives my visitors and the search engines what they want.
You can provide a written summary of the major points within the video and then inject your own thoughts, words, advice and meaning etc.
Tip #4
For video: you can also just curate the content of other videos using everything that I have just described in order to make your own video presentations. This works extremely well
Closing thoughts: don’t just throw up your videos without any text on your website. I basically curate my own videos on all of my websites to maximize content. I do this so that I can follow my own advice and add text to the post. I want to give the search engines as much content as they can digest because it will only help me to rank higher. Right now, having lots of high quality unique text is going to work in your favor.
What Not To Do
Don’t be a you know what and just copy, copy and copy. I am not advocating this. I am advocating building QUALITY content based on already trusted sources for the same information. The goal is to be a good Internet citizen and create lively discussions that share a wealth of information. Don’t ruin this strategy in the long run.
Remember that you must also create your own content. Aim to be like a curator of a world famous museum. You want to provide value!
How to Successfully Do This
I created this video because I saw the search term “content curation strategy” pop up in MichasMarketing.com’s Analytics. By creating this amazing video, I am going to generate a ton of traffic to fulfill this keyword query.
I am who I say I am. I have nothing to hide. I’m not operating in a shady or malicious way. This is what I recommend that you do as well if possible. Don’t pollute the Internet and you won’t have any trouble generating traffic and organic backlinks/followers etc.

Setup RSS Feeds for all of the Authority sites in your niche. Curate their content while linking back to them.
You will never run out of ideas doing this. You’ll begin to understand your niche better and what keywords are highly engaging.
Repeat this until infinity and you’ll have loads of targeted white hat traffic.
